Environmental Friendly Residence for Artists` 03
May 1 - September 15, 2003 - Tchamla Kingdom
Dear colleagues and friends,

We have the pleasure to inform you that Tchamla Kingdom will launch its first Environmental Friendly Residence for Artists from May 1 until September 15, 2003.

The Art Residence is designed to provide environment and conditions for independently working artists to experience new situation, which gives them opportunity to build their personal creative capacity. They will be invited to work interdisciplinary. Residency in Tchamla Kingdom creates conditions for artists to come out of the frame of their everyday activities and to experience environment, which provokes spontaneity and leads to creative process.

The Art Residence will be part of the summer programme of a small art-center “Tchamla Kingdom”, where Bulgarian artists meet during the summer. Tchamla Kingdom is a long-term project realized by Destination Bulgaria Foundation. Tchamla is a village in the south part of Rhodopes mountain. The village itself was abandoned in 1986. 180 inhabitants from fourteen big families lived there and 30 houses were built from 1912 – 1986. Since June, 2002 members of Destination Bulgaria Foundation has inhabited the building of the local school and started a circle of events.

During the residency the artists could experiment with raw materials and work with objects from the local environment. A studio for movement training and physical exercises is provided. Artists will work on a concrete project and will draw their own personal agenda. We target emerging artists, working in the field of contemporary dance, theatre, visual arts, photography, land-art, architecture and stage design using interdisciplinary approach, crossing borders between different disciplines, ready to explore art forms in site-specific context.

The Art Residence aims to:
- give an opportunity for artists to experience quality new situation, different from their everyday life, thus gaining knowledge of their creative capacity;
- offer different way of artistic self-approach;
- create conditions for site-specific artistic work, exploring links between arts and environment;
- provoke artist’s spontaneity in natural environment;
- distribute knowledge and build up professional skills through practice;
- meet artists from different countries and create a platform for exchange of ideas and professional information.

Deadline for applications 15th of April 2003. Participation fee for two weeks period is 150 Euro. All selected participants who need visa will receive official invitation at the Bulgarian embassy in the nearest city or country. The organizers will meet at the airport, railway or bus station everyone selected; in-country transportation will be provided. Resident artists will be accommodated in separate houses within the village. Facilities for self-catering and food provided. Linens, working materials and bikes provided.
